The NKL came to Melbourne on the 4-7th February and with a little encouragement and the weekend off from instructing I was keen to get back into things.
It hasn’t been a very good start to the year for me, with a back injury that put me off the water for a month, and getting slammed on the head hard the day before competition I wasn’t feeling the greatest. As the wind was forecast to be off shore in St Kilda the Friday, we headed one and half hours out of the bay to Barwon Heads. I’d only been here once before as it’s a wave spot, and St Kilda is usually on 24/7. The wind was starting to build and with a quick riders briefing first possible start was in 30 minutes and us girls were up first. I decided to take my 9m ENDURO and it was a good choice. I didn’t land all the tricks that I wanted to in this heat but still came 2nd. My second heat was much better, landing everything consistently and it paid off as I got 1st. We had to wait a while for our final and the tide was coming in fast, we watched as the conditions became much more challenging and space between waves got worse. Still on the 9m I went for a blind judge and missed. Unfortunately my kite got caught in the waves, inverted and went inside out, when I finally got it back in the air, there wasn’t much time left in the heat. Still feeling positive, I did what I could in the remaining time.. Landed a raily to blind and an sbend. During our final the wind had started to increase which was perfect for the big air competition after. Staying out on the water for another short session before heading in and back home. It was a good day! Presentations were held back in St Kilda the Sunday. We weren’t very lucky with the wind for the rest of the weekend so we didn’t have time for double eliminations. I’m very happy with my second place for the ladies! Big up to Katie Potter for taking the title and Sofia Carreno for third.
