The British Kitesurfing Competitions are all wrapped up for another year with the final event finishing at my local spot, Hunstanton.
I found myself looking at the forecast daily during the lead up to the event and it wasn’t looking great. I was pretty excited, one reason for it being at home and the second reason because it was a close call between Rosanna Jury and I for the overall Pro title. All the guys running the competition made the executive decision to have riders briefing the night before competition day as we were to meet at 7am at Heacham beach the following morning, for a first possible start being 7.30am. Unfortunately we couldn’t run the event from Hunstanton Saturday morning as the tide was high so there’s no beach. Hunstanton is famous for its’ massive lagoons and butter flat water on a mid-low spring tide so it was a bit of a shock to ride at Heacham during high tide. The conditions were challenging! We all found the chop a nightmare, but with the wind only forecasted for the morning, we powered through the tough conditions. Our heats were ran again with the dingle elimination format and my first heat was up against Georgina Monti. Georgina performed well and won that heat, I scored 2nd which then put me up against Holly Kennedy. It was all or nothing in this heat, winning this heat would put me into the semi finals, losing it would mean I was out for that competition. The tide had started to drop just a little so I got back on form, won against Holly and went into the semi finals. My 3rd heat was with another Ozone rider Sukie Robertson and Georgina. By this time the wind had started to become a little bit inconsistent and dropping but the tide had started to drop and the water flattened off, I got 2nd. I’d unfortunately missed my chance to get 1st or 2nd at this event, but I got to compete against Holly Keenan for 3rd or 4th. My best trick in this heat being a raily to blind. Once the Pro’s were all completed, we moved the competition back to Hunstanton, but unfortunately the wind dropped so we weren’t able to complete any other categories. Prize giving was held later on at our Sailing Club and I was happy with my 3rd placing at the Hunstanton event, but even happier to get awarded 2nd for the Pro Ladies overall this year. As the BKC tour is over for this year, I’m looking forward to spending the upcoming season in Melbourne working with Dan Sweeny at Go Kite and a little trip to New Zealand for their Nationals on the 12th-15th November!
