Thanks to Jim from Kite World and Rou from IKSURF mag for organising the first round of the British Kitesurfing Championships which was held at Lancing, down South of the UK. I headed down there a day before the event hoping to get a good session in, but we were greeted with rain, more rain and a cross off wind…. Lovely British weather. After not have ridden for a couple of weeks, a sore wrist from a previous session and my last competition being the New Zealand nationals in the beginning of 2014, I was feeling the competition nerves. Saturday’s wind conditions turned out to be really good, and sunny weather after a not very promising forecast, the only thing I wasn’t really used to was the chop, especially as I was to be doing all my tricks going out, I found it very challenging! In my first heat, I was up against another fellow team member Sukie and another rider Rosanna. I was debating whether to take out my 8m or 10m Catalyst and decided with the 8m as the wind was pretty good. My performance wasn’t great and I took up 3rd, progressing into what we call the ‘losers final’ through a dingle elimination process.
During that second heat, I relaxed a little bit, knowing what it was like out there. I landed all my tricks I went for, give or take a few which then put me into the final. As they ran the Amateur mens in-between our heats, it gave us all a bit of a break and meant the conditions didn’t change much either, the wind just getting a little bit lighter for me on my 8m Cataylst towards the end of the heat. I felt this heat went well, not throwing as much down as in my second heat which put me in a disadvantage but obviously only focusing on my riding it was hard to guess which podium spot I’d end up on. The results were kept quiet until Saturday evening at the prizing giving where I found out I took third place in the Pro’s. Next event-25th/26th July in Essex, will keep you posted!
